I was waging war against the blackberry bushes creeping their way through our back fence a few days ago, and I realized that my attitude towards blackberries is somewhat the same as my attitude towards the Republican party. I find them insidious and encroaching and I despise what they do, but I have to admire their efficency. Blackberries are amazing plants, when you get down to it. You can cut them out, dig them out, burn them out, and it does nothing. They still come slithering back, strangling all other plants, pulling down down fences, and drinking the blood of any poor gardener (or gardener's child) who comes in their path. Once a year they try to win you over with berries, but even then they stain your clothes. Blackberries. Hmph.
Life is slow here. I feel a bit like I'm in hibernation. What did I do today? I slept late, read a novel, watched Star Trek reruns, kept my mother company while she was cleaning out a closet, cooked dinner for the family, and walked the dog. It's not a bad schedule, it's just ... weird. I'm glad I'm heading back to school. I wish there was a way I could have had home and the job I had at school this summer at the same time, continuously. I'm glad I spent time at home (which, by the way, calmed down a lot after my mother returned from her vacation) but I like being busier ... and I really loved that job. Oh well. I'm just really lucky I've gotten what I have out of this summer. All in all, it's been pretty good.
